Kyoto geisha start New Year preparations

Tuesday 14th December, 03:27 AM JST

Japanese traditional geisha entertainers in Kyoto gave a seasonal greeting to their dance master Monday as part of the ‘‘kotohajime’’ event signaling the start of their preparations for the New Year season. The geisha performers, including apprentices called maiko, visited the home of Inoue Yachiyo, a master of the Kyomai dance school, in the western Japan city’s Hanamachi entertainment quarter.

They lined up to greet Yachiyo in a room decorated with high stacks of Japanese New Year’s rice cakes, citing the ceremonial word, ‘‘Congratulation,’’ and in return received fans from her along with encouraging words: ‘‘Hang in there.’’
